Jouyssance brings Tudor England to Orange County

Early Music Singalong

Ever wondered what it would be like to sing with Jouyssance? Well, this summer you can find out! Please join us, one and all, for a participatory singalong of William Byrd’s Four-Part Mass, including dynamic introduction and coaching from artistic director Nicole Baker. In the style of a holiday Messiah singalong, and in honor of FNR founder/patron John Leicester's annual singing parties, come raise your voices with Jouyssance!

Scores will be provided, but please visit our Facebook page and "join" the Singalong Event, so that we can make sure we have adequate numbers of scores for all participants.

$15 suggested donation for the singalong (including score and refreshments).
All proceeds from this event will go towards Jouyssance's expanding outreach efforts.

“Westron Wynde” is an anonymous 16th-century song that became the basis for some of England’s most glorious Renaissance Masses. Jouyssance will reprise its wildly successful The Spirit Child, a 16th-century Aztec Christmas tale complete with drama and music from the New World. This updated production will include Fray Bernardino de Sahagun’s historic Nativity story for the Aztecs, elements of the Mexican pastorela tradition, and musical gems of the Mexican Renaissance by Fernandez, Araujo, Padilla and Franco -- all with a liberal sprinkling of Nahuatl.

The end of October ushers in several days that take dramatically different views of the Great Beyond, be it the commercial kitsch of Hallowe’en, the solemnity of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, or the jarring images of the Mexican Día de los Muertos. Jouyssance will present music honoring these traditions by Renaissance masters Andrea and Giovanni Gabrielli, Orlando di Lasso, William Byrd, and Tomás Luis de Victoria, as well as excerpts from Hildegard’s Ordo virtutum and Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.

Be it the battle of the sexes or of nations, war has inspired poets and composers since the begining of time. Jouyssance delves into the fractious fray, presenting excerpts of Monteverdi's virtuosic Madrigals of Love and War, plus Janequin's La Guerre and Gabrieli's La Battaglia. The ensemble will then explore music history's facination with the hit tune L’Homme armé, presenting mass movements by such illustrious composers as Josquin, Palestrina, Ockeghem, Morales and Dufay.

Join us for an evening of Twelfth Night storytelling, as we bring a sixteenth-century Aztec Christmas tale to life with drama and Spanish music from the Old and New Worlds.

Jouyssance takes Fray Bernardino de Sahagun’s historic adaptation of the Nativity

Jouyssance is pleased to participate in a special day of celebration
at St Mary of the Angels!

St. Mary’s, where we rehearse and where we recently recorded our soon-to-be-released CD of Christmas music, will be playing host to their bishop, the Rt. Rev'd Daren K. Williams. At 4:15, the bishop will present a concert of organ works, including works by J. S. Bach, Langlais, Vierne, and Gerald Near. Following the organ programme, St. Mary’s will hold a Solemn Evensong and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, with music provided by Jouyssance. We’ll be performing works by Byrd, Palestrina, Lasso, and Dunstable, along with Christopher Tye’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis.

Our performance time will be determined by the bishop’s schedule, but is expected to be around 5 pm.

The concert is free, although St. Mary’s will accept donations to support ongoing restoration of the organ. For more information, please contact Fr. Kelley at 323-660-2700.

Included are portions of the Mass of Tournai (arranged by Southern California composer, John Biggs) and Dufay's Missa Se La Face Ay Pale, the complete Palestrina Sicut Cervus, Gibbons' O Clap Your Hands, Ave Maria by Parsons and polychoral works by Gabrieli and Guerrero. Other featured composers are Machaut, Josquin, Monteverdi, Gesualdo and that old standby, Anonymous.

Josquin des Prez and his generation set the standards for Renaissance polyphony. Jouyssance explored some of Josquin's most beloved sacred music, as well as sampled his widely varied secular works. Music by Brumel, Isaac and de la Rue also were featured.
